Black-headed Gull, 2cy, W[E5RT]

Black-headed gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus), 2nd calendar year
Zoetermeer, Benthuizerplas, The Netherlands. June 7, 2011. W[E5RT] (Arnhem 3693457) Second-calendar year Black-headed gulls with an (almost) complete hood (such as this individual) can easily be mistaken for an adult, especially when seen at rest. Indicative for this age though are the brown first-generation feathers: the carpal bar across the lesser and median coverts, the inner tertials, the primaries and especially the tail band.
(Ringing date: June 2, 2010, Benthuizer Plas, Zoetermeer, The Netherlands. Age: pullus.)

Kokmeeuw (Chroicocephalus ridibundus), 2de kalenderjaar
Benthuizerplas, Zoetermeer, 7 juni 2011.
(Ringdatum: 2 juni 2010, Zoetermeer, Benthuizer Plas. Leeftijd: pullus.)

European Herring Gull, >6cy, G[M.ACZ] with G[F.AFN], displaying "choking" behavior

European Herring Gull (Larus argentatus), >6th calendar year
Texel, Kelderhuispolder, Gull colony, May 7, 2011. Green M.ACZ. Adult male European Herring Gull in summer (alternate) plumage, together with female Green F.AFN (left), displaying "choking" behavior in which it squats and bends forwards while making pecking movements without touching the ground. Note also that the wing is not supported by the flank feathers (compare with the female on the left). Choking occurs in hostile clashes as well as in pair formation and nest-showing sequences (source: The Animal in Its Word - Niko Tinbergen).
(Ring info: ringed May 23, 2009, Kelderhuispolder, Texel, The Netherlands. Sex: female. Age: unknown, after 5th calendar year.)

Zilvermeeuw (Larus argentatus), >6de kalenderjaar
Meeuwenkolonie Kelderhuispolder Texel, 7 mei 2011. Groen M.ACZ. Adulte man Zilvermeeuw in zomerkleed, samen met vrouwtje Groen F.AFN (links). The Animal in Its Word - Niko Tinbergen)
(Ringdatum: 23 mei 2009, Kelderhuispolder, Texel. Geslacht: vrouw. Leeftijd: onbekend, na 5de kalenderjaar.)

Rotterdam, Europoort, The Netherlands, April 18, 2011. Y[E060]Y[E]. Adult Lesser Black-backed Gull in summer (alternate) plumage. The blackened face and belly of this individual show that it has been resting on a pile of ore, stored in the area for production.

Kleine Mantelmeeuw (Larus fuscus graellsii - Dutch integrade), 7de kalenderjaar
Europoort, Rotterdam, 18 april 2011. Y[E060]Y[E]. Adulte Kleine Mantelmeeuw in zomerkleed.
(Ringdatum: 4 juli 2005, Europoort, Rotterdam. Leeftijd: pullus.)

Leiden, Maresingel, March 12, 2011. Yellow H.501 Helgoland N006485. Fifth-calendar year Lesser Black-backed Gull, in full summer (alternate) plumage. Note the black markings on the bill.
Last seen in Leiden on October 24, 2010, this gull surprisingly turned up in Leiden once more where it has now been for a week. I would expect this individual to leave for the breeding grounds in Germany soon.
(Ring info: ringed June 30, 2007, Amrum, Odde, Germany. Age: pullus.)

Kleine Mantelmeeuw (Larus fuscus), 5de kalenderjaar
Maresingel, Leiden, 12 maart 2011. Geel H.501 Helgoland N006485.

(Ringdatum: 30 juni 2007, Amrum, Odde, Duitsland. Leeftijd: pullus.)

Black-Headed Gull - WHITE [LSB] / black

Black-headed Gull, W[LSB], 6cy, leucistic

Black-headed gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus), 6th calendar year
Amsterdam, Bijlmermeer, The Netherlands, March 6, 2011. W[LSB] (Arnhem 3651665). Leucistic adult Black-headed gull, lacking pigment on the mantle and scapulars. The wing coverts show only very light coloration, whereas the secondaries and primaries are a very light gray. Full black pigmentation is present though in the primaries.

Compared to the observation on February 25, the head moult is now in full progress and is about 10 % complete.
(Ringing date: Amstelkanaal, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, January 2, 2007. Sex: male. Age: second calendar year.)

Kokmeeuw (Chroicocephalus ridibundus), 6de kalenderjaar
Bijlmermeer, 6 maart 2011. W[LSB] (Arnhem 3651665). Leucistische adulte Kokmeeuw.

(Ringdatum: Amstelkanaal, Amsterdam, 2 januari 2007. Geslacht: man. Leeftijd: 2de kalenderjaar.)

European Herring Gull, 5cy, Y[H.277]

Amsterdam, 25.02.2011. Photo by Maarten van Kleinwee.

European Herring Gull (Larus argentatus), 5th calendar year
Amsterdam, Vensterpolder, The Netherlands, February 25, 2011. Y[H.277], (Helgoland 4295868). Fifth-calendar year European Herring Gull in winter (basic) plumage. I had this individual marked as a 4th-calendar year type, based on the extensive head markings, the bill with light base and black markings on the tip, the black markings on the tail and the brown markings on the upper wing. It goes to show that ageing gulls is far from straight-forward.
(Ringinfo: June 30, 2007, Amrum, Germany. Age: pullus)

Zilvermeeuw (Larus argentatus), 5de kalenderjaar
Grote Dobbe, Zoetermeer.Y[H.277], (Helgoland 4295868). Vijfde-kalenderjaar Zilvermeeuw in volledig winterkleed.
(Ringdatum: 30 juni 2007, Amrum, Duitsland. Leeftijd: pullus.)

Black-Headed Gull - WHITE [E5RE] / black

Black-headed Gull, >3cy, W[E5RE]

Black-headed Gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus), >3rd calendar year
Leiden, Zijlpoort, The Netherlands, February 2, 2011. W[E5RE] (Arnhem 3693322). Adult Black-headed gull in the final stages of its moult to summer (alternate) plumage: the hood is now 80% complete. This individual started the moult in November 2011, much earlier than the norm of January/February. The process is taking much longer though: weeks instead of days for the hood to be completely replaced.
(Ringing date: June 2, 2010, Benthuizerplas, Zoetermeer, The Netherlands. Sex: unknown. Age: unknown, older than 2nd-calendar year.)

Kokmeeuw (Chroicocephalus ridibundus), >3de kalenderjaar
Zijlpoort, Leiden, 2 februari 2011. W[E5RE] (Arnhem 3693322).
(Ringdatum: 2 juni 2010, Benthuizerplas, Zoetermeer. Geslacht: onbekend. Leeftijd: onbekend, na 2de kalenderjaar.)
