The inner primaries P1 and P2 have been dropped and active moult is present in the greater coverts. Note the adult-looking head with a 98% complete hood and the dark maroon bill. All remaining wing and tail feathers are first-generation.

De binnenste handpennen P1 en P2 missen, en ook missen enkele grote dekveren. De kopt toont als die van een adult met een 98% complete kap en een donkerrode snavel. De nog aanwezig zijnde vleugel- en staartveren zijn allen eerste-generatie.

IJmuiden, 12 juni 2011. Bruxelles H152497. Adulte Zilvermeeuw, ruiend naar winterkleed: P1 en P2 missen. Opvallend is de zwarte vlek op de buitenvlag van P4, iets wat ongebruikelijk is maar klaarblijkelijk binnen de variatie valt. (Zie ook Groen MABK).

W[E5RT] (Arnhem 3693457) Second-calendar year Black-headed gulls with an (almost) complete hood (such as this individual) can easily be mistaken for an adult, especially when seen at rest. Indicative for this age though are the brown first-generation feathers: the carpal bar across the lesser and median coverts, the inner tertials, the primaries and especially the tail band.

W[E5RT] (Arnhem 3693457) Tweede-kalenderjaar Kokmeeuwen met een (bijna) complete kap (zoals bij dit individu) kunnen makkelijk voor een adult aangezien worden, vooral als ze in rust gezien worden. Kenmerkend voor de leeftijd zijn echter de bruine eerste-generatie veren: de band over de kleine- en middelste dekveren, de binnenste tertials, de handpennen, en vooral de staartband.

Second-calendar year Lesser Black-backed Gull, presumed Norwegian Lesser Black-backed Gull (L. f. intermedius), moulting to second-winter plumage (second basic, second cycle). Active moult can be seen in the wings where primaries P1 to P6 are new second-generation featheres, P7 is half-grown, and P8 to P10 are old. Secondaries S1 to S3 are also new second-generation feathers.

Maresingel, Leiden, 4 juni 2011. Blauw VE1E. Tweede-kalenderjaar Kleine Mantelmeeuw, vermoedelijk een Noorse (L. f. intermedius), ruiend naar tweede-winterkleed. De actieve rui is duidelijk waarneembaar in de vleugels waar handpennen P1 tot P6 nieuwe, tweede-generatie veren zijn, P7 half volgroeid is, en P8 tot P10 nog de oude, eerste-generatie veren zijn. Armpennen S1 tot S3 zijn ook nieuwe, tweede-generatie veren.
