The bill is predominantly black but turning yellow in most places, with the red gonys spot already starting to appear.

Westkapelle strand, 24 september 2010. Rood H.328, Helgoland N007900. Derde-kalenderjaar Kleine Mantelmeeuw, met uitgebreide "winterstreping" op de kop, borst, en in de nek. De snavel is grotendeels zwart maar kleurt al geler op de meeste plaatsen, waarbij de rode gonysvlek al zichtbaar wordt.

Fourth-calendar year Lesser Black-backed Gull, with suspended moult: P1 to P5 are new and fully grown, P6 to P9 are old and all present. All secondaries are old, the tail seems to be all white and worn. This gull was ringed in the far north of Norway.

Vierde-kalenderjaar Kleine Mantelmeeuw, met onderbroken rui: P1 t/m P5 zijn nieuw en volgroeid, P6 t/m P10 zijn oud en allen aanwezig. Alle armpennen zijn oud, de staart lijkt geheel wit en gesleten. Deze meeuw is in het hoge noorden van Noorwegen geringd.

"Le Goéland pontique (Larus cachinnans) était autrefois une espèce très orientale, les colonies les plus proches de l'Europe de l'Ouest se situant principalement dans le sud-est de l'Europe, l'Ukraine et le sud de la Russie. Mais au cours des cent dernières années, sa population a connu une expansion importante vers le nord et l'ouest, notamment en Ukraine, en Pologne, et dans le Bélarus.
Dans les années 1980, une population nicheuse s'est établie le long du fleuve Vistule, dans le centre-ouest de la Pologne, et en 2007, plus de 850 couples nichaient dans le pays. Une grande partie de la croissance de cette population serait due à un fort courant d'immigration issu d'Ukraine.
Pour le vérifier, entre 1999 et 2006, environ 500 goélands ont été capturés dans des colonies de Pologne centrale et méridionale. Grzegorz Neubauer et Magdalena Zagalska, de l'Institut d'Ornithologie de l'Académie Polonaise des Sciences, et Jacek Betlej, du Muséum de Haute-Silésie, nous ont permis de mettre en ligne une version française de son étude intitulée "The origin of Caspian Gulls breeding in Poland" publiée en anglais dans la revue British Birds en septembre 2007."

This individual has extensive dark markings on the head and in the neck, a dark eye ring, and a bill which has a light-pink base with small black markings, an orange gonys spot, and a yellow tip.

Zilvermeeuw (Larus argentatus) vierde kalenderjaar

Noordpier, IJmuiden, 5 september 2010. Groen M.ALR. Vierde-kalenderjaar Zilvermeeuw, ruiend naar winterkleed. Dit individu heeft uitgebreide streping op de kop en in de hals, een donkere oogring, en een snavel met een lichtroze basis met zwarte markeringen, een oranje gonysspot en een gele punt.

Leiden, Maresingel, September 4, 2010. Yellow H.501 Helgoland N006485. An already very adult looking fourth-calendar year Lesser Black-backed Gull, moulting to fourth-winter plumage (fourth cycle, fourth prebasic moult). Note the black markings on the otherwise yellow bill and the dark striping on the head and neck. P8 in the left wing can be seen sticking out; it is about to be shed a few moments later.

Kleine Mantelmeeuw (Larus fuscus), vierde kalenderjaar

Maresingel, Leiden, 4 september 2010. Geel H.501 Helgoland N006485. Een al zeer adult uitziende vierde-kalenderjaar Kleine Mantelmeeuw, ruiend naar vierde-winterkleed. In de gele snavel zijn nog zwarte markeringen te zien, de kop en nek zijn licht gestreept. P8 in de linkervleugel zit los en zal even later uitvallen.
